George Nelson has got to be one the most recognized and prolific names in mid century furniture design. I have a handful of favourite of pieces, one of which I recently purchased! I've been hunting for months trying to find the exact right thing to put infront of my sofa and I'm very excited to have a Nelson Platform Bench as my new coffee table! Of course it's not an original - that would be to much moolah!

Wondering where I got such a sweet bench? Nood... Now yes some may argue that it's a reproduction, frankly I don't care. I was able to afford something I love and will enjoy for a long time to come. Not to mention Nood is having a fabulous sale, so if there's something you're interested in and you're on a tight budget I'd suggest checking Nood out. 

OBJECT ORANGE

If you're planning a visit to the Okanagan (maybe checking out the wine festival) you have got to stop at "Object Orange." A store entirely dedicated to the Mid Century Modern Home. Oh swoon, it is absolutely amazing! I just wanted to roll around in all of its' mid century modern glory. The collection of pieces he carries are in amazing condition, of the best quality and totally unique. You'll be able to find some rare gems, and there's more than just furniture, there's art work, jewelry, pottery, electronics and lighting. The prices are right!

There's enough teak, chrome, vinyl, lucite and coloured glass to melt the pickiest of purchasers. You'll find a ton of photos and information on Object Oranges' Facebook page. Object Orange is located at 110 Cannery Lane in The Arts District - Kelowna

COLOUR ME RAD

The winter pallet is so pale. Even on a clear sun shiny day, the sky is grey and the sunshine is pale. Nothing bright, nothing saturated in rich colour, everything is hazy. I miss summer days of purple flowers and green grass. So in an attempt to liven things up, I went in search of colour at Apartment Therapy. 

 

WOOD CUT CHARM

Anthropologie has hit the nail on the head with this line of beautiful home furnishings and decor made of walnut, elm, teak, and reclaimed pine. The part I like most is each piece has its own personality: playful, regal, industrial, all of which ooze rustic charm and elegance.

WEEKLY GREEN TIP

Maybe you're looking for a change, or you've recently moved out on your own. Either way you need furniture.  

Look at your local thrift and consignment shops and check garage sales. I can guarantee you'll find at least one excellent item to purchase. Lots of thrift shops work with charities, so consider your money well spent and saved. You could also be saving un-wanted items from the landfill. However I wouldn't jump at the opportunity to purchase a used sofa or side chair due to the harmful chemicals used in their foam stuffing.

When purchasing sofa's and lounge chairs be sure to buy green. Make the effort to buy items that are low, or better yet, free of harmful toxins like formaldehyde and flame retardants which can be found in the polyurethane foam used to stuff seat cushions. These toxins can be absorbed into your body through your skin and released into the air as dust particles. Yum!

TV VANITY

With every TV comes a mess of cables and digital boxes that all have to be interconnected. Not to mention at least 3 remote controls and a plethora of dvd's and cd's. OCEAN SAFE

When I was a munchkin I watched a movie called "White Squall" and from that moment on I was absolutely tormented by the idea of ever getting on a boat. Now that I am older, wiser and know how to swim - I've developed a liking for boats and a love for nautical decor. So I thought I'd share some images that evoke the emotions of open water without having to hit the waves.

DAVID HICKS 1929-1998

British designer David Hicks is the first designer I had ever read about where I wanted to know more, and more, and more. David Hicks had an amazing way of making a room look beautiful yet effortless. Every detail about the space and it's design were always in perfect harmony. Every space was always enveloped in colour and saturated in eye catching, envious glamour. I envy his use of geometry and scale to create interest and emphasis. 

The following images are from the David Hicks Archives, when ever I look at these photos I feel as if I'm taken into dramatic movie scene. I wish I could step through the lens and into the world of David Hicks.
